Snow Snow Go Away

I am so over winter.

Over it.

Everything is frozen. The only place to ride is in the indoor. I am tired of riding in circles, the horses are tired of trotting in circles. I want to trail ride!!

Today was the first time I've been able to get Amber and Rayna up to the barn in like 3 weeks because of the snow! I let them run around in the indoor and get some energy out since it's too snowy and icy out in the field to run around!

I also got brave and decided to jump on Amber bareback, even though she hasn't been ridden in about a month. I'm working really hard on learning to trust her. I love that horse and I want us to be able to trust eachother.

I'm planning on hopefully riding both of them for real on Friday and over the weekend. They haven't gotten real workouts in awhile, I really need to start getting them back into shape if I'm going to show them this spring/summer. I really want the snow to melt so I can start working them out in the fields up and down hills, it would be great for them. Gus too!

Speaking of Gus. I swear he knows what my car sounds like, because without fail, when I get to the barn, he is up at the gate somewhere waiting for me to say hi! I brought him in today for a bit, and gave him some love but didn't really do anything with him.

And just a couple pictures of the girls out in their field.

Ice, Ice, Everywhere

Not a whole lot to update today. We had freezing rain yesterday so it was too icy to bring the horses up to the barn. Even Gus was too far away to bring in and he's usually my go to when it's too icy to bring the mares up the driveway. So I dragged my wonderful and tolerant boyfriend out into the field with Rayna and Amber (and their 3 pasture mates) just to hang out with the girls for a bit. I of course ended up in the hay to keep warm while I made the poor boy take pictures of me. Then after I got done torturing my horses I headed back to the car (with the help of Jerry who let me lean on him all the way to the gate so I wouldn't fall on the ice).

It's supposed to be above freezing for the rest of the week, so hopefully by wednesday I'll be able to get Amber and Rayna up to the barn! I can't wait for spring, and warmth and trailriding!!
Jerry! Handsome Appy Man!

Me and my 2 girls. Rayna was confused, Ambers used to my weird!

Hay bed!

Rayna made a hay face hole

One More Time

I'm going to give this blogging thing one more shot. I would really like to chronicle the work I do with the 3 wonderful equines in my life! Right now I'm just going to highlight the goals I have for all 3 of them for the year. Then I will begin tracking their progress starting tomorrow.

I'm sure everyone could figure out why the title of my blog is Of Mares and Mules. I have 2 beautiful mares and 1 mule (who technically isn't mine, but might as well me). Amber (Percheron/thoroughbred cross), Rayna (Clydesdale) and Gus (MULE!!).

2015 Goals for Amber:
- Begin Schooling 2'6
- Begin jumping full 2'3 courses
- Show Adult Equitation at the Dutchess County Fair
- Trail ride, lots and lots of trail riding until she learns to be comfortable doing it
- Show training level dressage

2015 Goals for Rayna:
- Work on steering and impulsion
- Start cantering under saddle
- Begin schooling Intro level dressage
- Show in Ride a Draft at the Dutchess County Fair

2015 Goals for Gus:
